At the start of the book, the heroine Lola Arias finds herself in a tenuous situation. Lola works for a cleaning company. One while cleaning a large house she witnesses a murder. However, Santiago Hernandez, one of the top crime bosses in Costa Rica, thwarted her attempts to flee. Not one to leave loose ends, Santiago intends to end her life. However, for inexplicable reason he finds himself drawn to her and decides to refrain from ending her life. Despite not taking her life, he didn’t trust her not to snitch and warned her that he was not above changing his mind if she told anyone about what transpired.
Lola was no ordinary house cleaner. The manner in which she stood up to Santiago it was clear she had dealings with his kind before. Never once did she cower before him, and she didn’t fear going toe to toe with him. Her actions impressed and frustrating Santiago. In all his life he never encountered a woman like her and she intrigued him. Even the men who worked with him were smitten by her.
A survivor in every sense of the word and she was bound and determined to remain free of her of her past. However, as the story progresses, she learns that one can never truly escape their past. Also, if she was to have a future, she needed to conquer it once and for all.
They both had tragic pasts and their determination to overcome the past set them on their current path. Despite the circumstances of their meeting, Lola and Santiago shared a hot and intense chemistry. Everyone close to them could sense the sexual tension brewing between them. I enjoyed seeing their relationship developed. It felt authentic and seeing this man that everyone feared falling so deeply in love made for an interesting read. A man who didn’t believe in love.
The secondary characters aided in making this a splendid read. Several surprises made its way into the story. A lot of readers will more than likely not appreciative by the length (over 600 pages), but I honestly believe a 300-page book would not have done justice to Lola and Santiago’s story.
Overall, When Lies Unfold was a solid enemies to lovers, cartel boss, romantic suspense
