Betwixt by Darynda Jones was an interesting and sometimes humorous read. I heard great things about the author, which made me ecstatic to receive a copy of the book for review.
I liked the idea of a forty (40) year old heroine, which is a rarity in the book world. The story introduces readers to Defiance Dayne, a broke and new divorcee. However, her fortune would change when a total stranger bequeathed her a house. (If I could be so lucky. ?)
With nothing left to lose, she journeys to Salem, Massachusetts to determine the veracity of her inheritance. What she discovered would lead to a life-changing experience.
The story took me on a journey filled with magical elements, snarky humour and adventure. Getting to know the characters turned out to be a wonderful experience. Annette, Defiance’s best friend, snarky humour had me laughing for most of the story. The rest of the cast added awesome support, in the form of humour, mystery and adventure, to this fun story.
Two things which intrigued me most about the story had to do with the mysterious handyman and the house Defiance inherited.
As the story appeared to be wrapping up, the author dropped a bombshell at the end, which took me by surprise. It, however, made the perfect setup for the second book, which I cannot wait to get my hands on.
Traci Odom narrated, and I enjoyed every moment. I believed she did a great job in voicing the characters and bringing each of them to life.
Lovers of paranormal stories would enjoy this new series by Darynda Jones.

I read this first and then listened. I am a sucker for magical houses. LOL
I would definitely listen to it again. Love the idea surrounding the house.
I really like the sound of this. It’s a definite addition to my wishlist.
I do hope you enjoy it if you get the chance to listen to it.
Great review. Sounds like a fab book. Glad you enjoyed it.
Yes it is. Looking forward to the next book.
Gorgeous cover! I also love that the heroine is 40. I’ve always loved reading about characters a little older than I am and now that I’m 30 it’s getting harder and harder to find books like that!
I do agree with you. It is like searching for a needle in a haystack.
I do want to try this series at some point. I really like the fact that the main character is in her 40s. Great review!
Yes it was refreshing to have a heroine over forty. I noticed there are quit a few books in this genre recently featuring heroines over forty.
Looks good Nadene. I’m still behind on her Charlie Davidson series and now I have another to add to my wish list 😉
I have yet to pick up that series. This is my first time reading her work.
This sounds absolutely delightful! And I love Darynda’s writing ❤ Lovely review, Nadene!
Its my first time experiencing her writing and I enjoyed it.
One of my favorite authors and I haven’t read this book! Your review just kicked me to go find it!
I hope you enjoy it.
This sounds great! Thanks for sharing
You are welcome. I had a good time with it.
Yes! The sentient house and the mysterious Roan caught my interest, too. I still need to tackle book two as well.
Do you want to buddy read book 2??
Would love to! 🙂
Great. I will DM you.
