At the end of Western Waves, Cherry delivered an interesting twist, which had me eager for the release of the next book in the Compass series. So when the opportunity came to read Northern Stars, the fourth book in the series, I immediately seized it. Northern Stars lived up to my expectations by delivering a beautiful, heartwarming and gut wrenching story of love, friendship, and accepting one’s self.

Hollywood's biggest star first belonged to me.

Breaking up with your high school sweetheart was one thing.
Breaking up with Hollywood’s favorite actor? That was a different situation.

I’d been in love with Aiden Walters since I was a little girl. We’d grown up as neighbors in small town Wisconsin. I knew him inside and out, and he knew every single piece of me. I was there when his career took off, and I was almost certain I’d always be a part of his life.

It wasn’t until a scandal broke out that I was forced to end things with Aiden. He didn’t take it very well. The boy I once loved began to hate me. He went off to California to leave all of his past behind—including me.

Five years later, he was back in town for the next few months taking care of some family business. He was staying in the only hotel in our small town. The hotel I now oversaw. For the next few months, I’d be forced to cater to the man who’s heart I’d broken all those years ago. The man who resented me. The man who swore he’d never speak to me again.

Now that he was back in town, in constant connection with me, I had to keep reminding myself daily of why I ended things with him in the first place. Otherwise, I’d find myself falling in love with him all over again. Only this time, I was certain that if I’d fell, he wouldn’t be willing to catch me.

I have been following the series from the beginning and have enjoyed all the books. Choosing a favourite would be hard, but if I had to choose, Eastern Lights would top the list with Northern Stars coming in at a close second. Which would make it one of my favourites for this year.

Aiden Walters and Hailee Jones are the featured characters of this installment. Aiden’s character intrigued me from his brief introduction in Western Waves and his story in Northern Waves owned my heart. A beautiful soul, talented, humble and kindhearted and that one friend who would have your back in the best and worst of times. A fact to which Hailee could testify.

Hailee is a beautiful woman who has been bullied all her life because of her size. However, she doesn’t let it define her. Yes, there were moments when she felt less than nothing because of the bullying, but she grew in confidence throughout the story. Soon, she didn’t care what people thought of her. Only Aiden’s opinion mattered, and he loved everything about her. She was his person, his soulmate, and best friend.

I loved how their relationship develop from childhood to adulthood. The initial stages of their relationship were acrimonious, but it took one incident on the playground to change it all. Soon, they were inseparable. Aiden and Hailee had lots of issues working through and with each issue, they both had the other’s back. One can’t help but feel for them both. It upset me when they broke up, a breakup which was fueled by the interference of a selfish adult. I enjoyed seeing them rekindling their relationship. I worried about interference from the person responsible for their breakup in the past. Also, I feared that Aiden’s insecurities would also be a hindrance.

The supporting cast contributed to the story by adding depth and made for some interesting, humorous and shocking moments. There was one character with whom I had an issue. Something about them did not ring true, but I never expected that shocking revelation. It was fun catching up with the characters from the previous book and seeing where they are at in their relationship.

Northern Stars was an enjoyable read. Cherry finished the series on a grand note. I can’t wait to see what next she has in store for her readers.
