When Sinners Rise: Hart De Lune

Posted on April 22, 2024 by Nadene @ Totally Addicted to Reading in Reviews / 4 Comments

When Sinners Rise is the final book in the House of Skin series. Each story within the series is dark and definitely not for the faint-hearted. The heroes and heroines are people who lack conscience. They make no apologies for their actions and will do whatever it takes to make their mark in the criminal underworld. Shaw Cortez intrigued me throughout the series, and made me eager for his story.  When Sinners Rise delivered an intriguing and suspenseful tale, making it a fitting conclusion to the series.

Shaw Cortez was a wolf in sheep's clothing.
Charming. Beautiful. Brutal.
He made me feel things I'd forgotten, and then he took what little trust I had and scarred it further.
I’m not the same girl now, though.
I’m no one's property.
This time, I The House Of Skin Series deals with themes some may be uncomfortable with. These are bad men who make no apologies for their particular trade.

This book may be unsuitable for people under 17 years of age due to its use of sexual content, drug and alcohol use, and/or violence.

The focus of this instalment is the youngest Shaw brother and twin to the only girl among the Shaw siblings. Shaw was nothing like his siblings. He is a Cortez to the bone, but unlike his siblings, he possesses a softer side, which does not mesh with the family business.  So I was curious to learn the direction his story would take.

When Sinners Rise showed that Shaw was no walkover,. His siblings doubted his loyalty and his ability to stomach the dark and gritty side of the family business. He, however, is determined to prove his worth, which sees him accepting the difficult assignments they sent his way. It’s this determination that led him to accept the latest assignment, involving the retrieval of an asset the family had lost.

The asset, Mira, would have him struggling with his ideals, and his need to please his family.  In his desire to please his family, one sees just how brutal he could be given the circumstances. Nonetheless, no matter how he tries to be cruel like his siblings, his empathic side keeps showing itself in his dealings with Mira.

Throughout the story, Shaw demonstrated that, despite his inability to accept certain aspects of the family business, he was a Cortez through and through.

Don’t pick this up expecting a sweet and flowery romance. Instead, expect a complicated and chaotic. Drama, angst, deceit and violence formed the foundation of their relationship. It will have readers wondering if these two would have a happily ever after.

When Sinners Rise delivered a fitting conclusion to the House of Skin series. A series that was raw, gritty, dark, and intriguing.

About Charlotte E. Hart

Charlotte is a Dark Erotic Suspense/Romance author living in the heart of the Shropshire countryside in Great Britain. She’s lived all over the UK, but finally settled in a small town that still reeks of old school England. Writing and poetry have become a revolution for the soul, and she cherishes every second that she’s sitting at the laptop tapping her way into a new character. “Life is a torrent of differences, different needs and wants, and it doesn’t always end that well. Yet we strive …” Most of Charlotte’s work is intended for mature audiences only.

About Hart De Lune

What started out as a single book, an experiment between a plotter and a pantser, has turned into multiple books, spanning multiple series across mafia, cartel, and suspense—the darker shades of romance. Charlotte E Hart writes dark romantic suspense full of twists and turns. Rachel De Lune writes emotionally driven contemporary romance. Together, they write as Hart De Lune, both using their distinctive styles to create worlds filled with dark passion and scintillating characters

About Rachel De Lune

Rachel began scribbling her stories in the pages of a notebook several years ago and still can’t resist putting pen to real paper. What ifs are turned into heartfelt stories of love where there will always be a HEA. Rachel lives in the South West of England and if she’s not writing HEAs, she’s probably reading them. She is a wife and has a beautiful daughter.
