Review: Wild Highway by Devney Perry

Wild Highway by Devney Perry is the second book in the Runaway series and it can be read as a stand-alone. I went into this book with high expectations and Perry did not disappoint. She took me on a wild yet captivating journey, one which I have yet to recover.

This installment brings us Gemmaโ€™s story. From the moment of her introduction in book one, she piqued my interest, and I was curious about her story. Let me tell you it wasnโ€™t pretty. However, she proved to be one tough cookie. She pulled herself from a life on the streets to becoming a self-made millionaire. Despite this, she feels her life is missing something. She sold her cosmetics company and embarked on a road trip to California where she would deliver a Cadillac to the guy who looked out for while she used to live on the streets. However, before she delivered the Cadillac, she needed to make a detour so she could right a wrong and so her journey took her to Montana.

It displeased Easton Greer, manager and part owner of Greer ranch and resort in Montana to see Gemma on the property. It appeared she broke his heart eleven years ago. Afraid she would hurt him again, he it made his duty to make her life miserable, so she would leave. However, he did not count onย  old feelings to reignite and for Gemma, who gave as good as she got.

Easton had a stubborn streak a mile long, and he proved to be clueless sometimes. I was not a fan at first, but by the end I was team Easton. I loved his work ethics, his strength, his gentleness and his capacity for understanding.

Easton and Gemmaโ€™s chemistry turned out to be a scorcher. Despite having achieved so much Gemma struggles with self-doubt and feelings of not belonging.ย  Ii was a pleasured watching her coming to the realization that s she was loved and she had a place to call home.

I enjoyed how Gemma and Eastonโ€™s relationship developed and I was happy to see how it turned out. Their journey to happiness was not easy, but it was worth it in the end.

The story, despite the heavy topic, was peppered with humour and passion. I enjoyed the family setting, and I loved how the Greer family embraced Gemma.

Conclusion/Recommendation
Do you enjoy second chance romances set in a small town and one which gives you all the feels? Then purchase a copy of Wild Highway and while you are at it get a copy of Runaway Road as well. You will not regret it.

EXCERPT

I opened the door, a smile still on my face, and collided, headfirst, with a wall of muscle.
โ€œOh, sorry.โ€ I looked up and my heart stopped.
The smell of leather and aftershave filled my nose. I looked up to see a pair of dark brown eyes hooded by long, onyx lashes. I took in the straight nose, the sharp jaw and strong chin. My gaze dropped to the full lips Iโ€™d tasted once, on a night eleven years ago.
Iโ€™d never seen a face as symmetrical and so beautifully masculine as Easton Greerโ€™s.
Even when he scowled, like he was now, it was a wonder.
Heโ€™d gotten even more handsome. How was that possible? Heโ€™d transformed from a young man to just a man, man. Rugged and rough and sexy.
โ€œGemma.โ€ My name came out as a growl in his deep voice and I tore my gaze away from his mouth, taking a step back.
โ€œHi,โ€ I breathed, the air heavy and thick.
He took a step away, then another, his glare unwavering.
Easton cast his scowl over his shoulder and spotted the Cadillac. โ€œThat yours?โ€
โ€œYes.โ€
โ€œYouโ€™re staying here.โ€ Not a question. An accusation. If he had it his way, Iโ€™d be uninvited.
I lifted my chin. โ€œYes, I came to see Katherine.โ€
His jaw ticked. โ€œI thought weโ€™d gotten rid of you years ago.โ€
Ouch. I guess he was still pissed about that whole sex in his room and waking up to find me gone.
But, good or bad, he hadnโ€™t forgotten me.
