Hers to Tame by Rhenna Morgan is the second book in the Nola Knights series. I didnโt read the previous book prior to reading this installment, but I had no problem following the story. Each book in the series features a different couple.
In this installment we meet Cassie McClintock and Kir Vasilek. Cassie works as a reporter, while Kir is a member of the Russian Mafia. Being a reporter my not have been her ideal job, but it paid the bills. Kir and Cassie had met prior to this story being written. He provided her with information which helped to propel her career as a news anchor. During this time, they had a passionate affair, but when she discovered his ties to the mafia, she refused to accept his calls. After much soul searching, she sought him out to apologize for her actions. She would find herself caught up in a situation which began on a professional note but quickly became a passionate and romantic affair.
Kir was the perfect gentleman. He treated Cassie with the utmost respect. His willingness to protect her at all costs and his way with words were adorable.ย
He had his share of emotional insecurities where his immediate family concerned, but being with Cassie made him realize that love had the power to heal emotional wounds.
It took a while for Cassie to believe in Kirโs love for her. She also had a hard time embracing his familyโs acceptance. All this stemmed from the insecurities she had developed based on her experience with her family. I enjoyed watching her overcome her insecurities enabling her to follow her dream and claim her happily ever after with the man she loved.
I thought they were perfect for each other. The scenes they shared were swoon worthy, heartfelt and passionate.
I had a wonderful time with this story, so much so I purchased a copy of book one. It had the perfect blend of romance, drama, mystery and humour.
Characters from the previous book and those from the Haven Brotherhood series from which Nola Knights is a spin-off were present in this Installment. I loved their interactions and how they readily accepted Cassie into their fold. I loved them all with my favourite being Cassieโs Aunt Freida. She was a riot.
Conclusion/Recommendation
Hers to Tame delivered a well written plot, exceptional character development, and a passionate and swoon worthy romance. It would be the perfect read for fans of contemporary romance
READ AN EXCERPT
โPlease take this in the spirit itโs intended, but you work for a man whoโs suspected of leading a growing crime family. I donโt think me telling you where I live is a good idea.โ
โ1023 South Franklin Avenue.โ
Cassie stopped so hard she wobbled slightly in her heels. โHow did youโฆ I mean, I only just moved in there.โ
His smile softened and his words were offered with gentle deliberateness. โIโm a very thorough man, Cassie. You canโt possibly think I wouldnโt learn everything I could about a person before I shared important information with them.โ
Very thorough.ย Frighteningly so.ย ย She shook the foreboding off and resumed her trek to the station, albeit on slightly less stable legs. โAll the more reason for us to meet someplace public.โ
โAll right. Then Iโll pick you up and take you somewhere.โ
โNot necessary.โ She checked both ways on the street and hurried across. โJust tell me where you want to talk, and Iโll meet you there.โ
โIโm afraid my retrieving you and escorting you is nonnegotiable.โ
She frowned at him, but kept going. โYouโve got a lot of points you wonโt negotiate. Tell me why this oneโs one of them.โ
โBecause while Iโm very much interested in hearing what you have to share, Iโm not interested in anyone else hearing. The best way to ensure our privacy is to make sure no one else knows where weโre goingโincluding you.โ
She stopped just six feet from the stationโs front door. โYou donโt trust me?โ
โShould I?โย Hmm. He did kind of have a point. And given how sheโd stiffed him after their second date, he still might be wondering if sheโd simply used him. โFine. Pick me up at my place tomorrow at eight. But donโt pick any place fancy. A coffee shop, or someplace simple. And not Starbucks either. Itโs criminal what they charge for coffee.โ
His mouth twitched as if it were all he could do to keep a wisecrack trapped behind his lips. โYou seem determined to expose me to establishments with limited standards.โ He nodded, the picture of gentility and confidence. โIโll endeavor to pick a location that suits your expectations.โ He held out his hand, palm up. โUntil tomorrow, then.โ
He had great hands. Not too smooth like someone trapped in an office, but a manโs hands. Slightly calloused, with long fingers and blunt fingertips. Of all the things sheโd replayed from their time together, his touch had been the most frequent. Which was exactly why sheโd be smart to avoid any and all physical contact with him going forward.
Glutton for punishment and well-mannered Texas girl that she was, she slipped her palm against his.ย Oh, yeah.ย ย Still amazing.ย Electric and warm. Supercharged and bristling with promise.ย ย And that was just her hand.
โThank you again for the dinner. It wasnโt necessary, but I appreciate it all the same.โ Hating the breathiness in her voice, she tried to release her hand.ย ย Kir held it tight, the pad of his thumb subtly moving over the tender spot between her thumb and her forefinger. As if he were remembering other, more inยฌtimate places heโd touched her. โI assure you. The pleasure was all mine.โ
He gently released her, turned without the least amount of hesitation, and strolled toward the parking lot like he didnโt have a care in the world.ย ย Watching him was something to relish. An indulgence she didnโt even realize sheโd taken until heย stepped off the sidewalk and turned to open the door to his car.ย Great. And now heโs busted you ogling him.ย She swung one of the double glass doors open and strode into the arctic reception area.ย
โGirl, that dude was hot,โ Bonnie said before Cassieโs eyes could adjust from the blinding sunshine outside. โHe your boyfriend?โ
โOh, no.โ She set the paper bag on the counter and shook her head. โJust a contact that helped me out on a few stories a while back.โ
And ruined me for other men, but why quibble over details?ย Bonnie took the bag and opened it, but the look on her face and her answering chuckle said she didnโt buy a word Cassieโd said. โUh-huh. Looked to me like he was plotting how to peel you out of your professional getup.โ
Yeah, itโd felt like that, too. But she wasnโt going to think about that now. Or ever, if she could help it. โNope. Just talking business.โ She waved toward the bag and headed back toward the newsroom.
โGood business, or bad business?โ
Cassie swung the door to the hallway open and cast Bonnie one last look. โI havenโt decided yet. Could have been the lottery, or the biggest wrong turn of my life.โ
